Wait, huh? Seriously? Google is trying to buy NBC?
This seems to be some of the latest buzz on Wall Street, and why not? Wall Street is pretty much the business equivalent of the popular high school hangout spot we all wished we could have been a part of. The idea of NBC getting acquired is not “new” news, persay. But the idea of Google, a company with no real experience in the major media market, taking over such a powerful media source like NBC is nothing short of a really big deal.
Google doesn’t give many results on this topic…yet. But give it some time.
Right now, one of the few search results on this subject (John Battelle’s search blog) is saying that this is just a dumb idea. His main point is Google does not have the knowledge or experience to run a company like NBC. Ok, sure. I’ll agree with that. But they sure didn’t have any experience when they started Google only a decade ago and they pretty much run the world now - not really, but once again, give it some time.
What makes me lick my chops most when it comes to this is my high regard to Google. Be it in terms of what they’ve accomplished already or just how they run their organization. This is a company I think is going to continue to change the way the world operates. They are going to grow and expand in areas that seem, right now, far fetched for a company who’s flagship is web search based advertising.
All in all, a big acquisition like NBC is something I can see Google doing. If it’s not NBC, it will be something else, for sure. Mark my words. Google will be running the show before we even know what happened. The fact that a young company who’s business is advertising through web searches is even being considered to take over NBC says enough, I think.

I haven’t seen any commentary about this (yet), but Google’s lack of network television experience wouldn’t be an enormous stumbling block.
After all…what the hell does General Electric really know about the business? A little something, I’m sure, after owning NBC since the dawn of recorded speech…but what would it matter if NBC management stayed around after the takeover to run the show under Google’s big top?
And even if NBC higher-ups quit in droves, does anyone really believe that management professionals WOULDN’T be eager to compete for top spots at NBC-Google?
Unless Google suffers a complete financial meltdown and simultaneously sullies its stellar reputation (think Enron style — it would have to be that drastic), anything they touch will turn to gold…or at least $450 a pop Google shares.
